‘New Range Rover is a thing of beauty, a masterful piece of design’

NEWS
Something very strange happened a few weeks ago. I was invited to Land Rover HQ to see the new Range Rover and there, sitting outside the design offices, was a current model – still looking as regal as it ever has. Then the new Range Rover rolled out and parked right next to the current-generation car. In an instant, the model that I had loved for so long suddenly looked old and out of date. I’d found a new love. Now, I know that when you take a look at our pictures of the new Range Rover, you’ll probably think it’s a gentle evolution. But in the metal it really is a thing of beauty, a masterful piece of design that is the living embodiment of Land Rover Chief Creative Officer Gerry…

Councils fail to invest in electric car charging infrastructure

Councils fail to invest in electric car charging infrastructure

NEWS
Local councils are failing to invest in electric car charging infrastructure, according to damning new research.Of the 216 local authorities (covering 60 per cent of the UK population) that responded to a freedom-of-information request by DevicePilot, 52 per cent have spent no money on EV charging infrastructure in the past 12 months. This is in spite of the Government continuing to provide funding through its on-street residential chargepoint scheme.Nevertheless, the demand for chargers is there; 60 per cent of responding councils received complaints from the public about the availability, reliability or number of charging points in their areas over the same 12-month period. To make matters worse, 48 per cent of the local authorities said they either didn’t know how many chargepoints they were going to install in 2022 or were…

Plans for new Skoda Fabia Estate cancelled as Czech firms focuses on EVs

NEWS
The new Skoda Fabia supermini will be available as only a five-door hatchback, because plans for an estate version have been cancelled. In March 2021, Skoda CEO Thomas Schaefer told Auto Express that the brand would introduce a new Fabia Combi in 2023, which would be built in the Czech Republic at Skoda’s Kvasiny facility. Now, a statement from the brand confirms that while the estate version of the third-generation Fabia is still in stock and UK orders are still being taken on Skoda’s configurator, no successor will follow, citing ever-stricter CO2 regulations and the fact it has three new EVs planned by 2030, as the main drivers of the cancellation. “The European Commission’s recent decision to reduce the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 is accelerating the transformation from the…

Skoda students make plans for Kamiq rally car concept

Skoda students make plans for Kamiq rally car concept

NEWS
Skoda has once again set a team of apprentices to work on their very own concept car, which will be a rally-ready version of the marque’s Kamiq small SUV. As has been the case for the previous seven Skoda Student cars, it will be designed and built solely by Skoda trainees. But this year, to complete the rallying Kamiq, Skoda’s apprentices will receive a little aid from the company’s motorsport division. This student sketch previews the concept’s styling. Judging by the drawing, the Kamiq will lose its two rear doors and gain a whole host of rally car trinkets, such as a roof scoop, an enormous rear wing, flared wheelarches and an aggressive front splitter. As the students can rely on insight from Skoda’s motorsport team, we’re also expecting some fairly serious mechanical…

Thatcham slams Tesla over “fundamentally dangerous” software roll-out

NEWS
Tesla has been forced to abruptly withdraw the latest ‘over the air’ software roll-out for its autonomous driving system, after reports emerged from customers of bugs in the programme. The upgrade went out on Saturday and was withdrawn yesterday, as Elon Musk tweeted his acknowledgement of problems with the system it describes as ‘Full Self-Driving’. “Seeing issues with 10.3, so rolling back to 10.2 temporarily,” he announced via the social media platform. “Please note, this is to be expected with beta software. It is impossible to test all hardware configs in all conditions with internal QA, hence public beta.”Matthew Avery, Director of Insurance Research at Thatcham, the UK insurance industry funded research institute, has responded with a pithy condemnation of Tesla’s roll-out of so-called Beta-level technology to customers.“Tesla has been leading…
