Nearly two percent of UK vehicles are dodging road tax, survey shows

ADVICE
Latest DVLA roadside survey data suggests that 1.9 per cent of vehicles in the UK are being used unlicensed on the road, which amounts to 719,000 vehicles evading road tax.The figure compares to 634,000 unlicensed vehicles (excluding motorcycles) estimated in 2019, but the DVLA warns its survey sampling error means the year-to-year change is not statistically significant. In total, the potential tax revenue lost to the treasury is £119 million, however it’s not possible to quantify the actual loss. “Some of this will have been recovered through DVLA enforcement activity or through vehicle keepers paying arrears of VED to cover the untaxed period,” the DVLA said, adding “vehicles are often unlicensed for a relatively short period and often related to the change of keepership of vehicles. This means that revenue will…

Best all-season tyres 2021: tyre brands reviewed and UK prices compared

Best all-season tyres 2021: tyre brands reviewed and UK prices compared

ADVICE
There’s never been more interest in all-season tyres, as drivers seek to find a one-stop solution that will provide safe motoring in all conditions. The rise of SUVs, with their often less-than-sharp handling, has also fuelled the rise of the all-season tyre, because drivers are more prepared to accept compromises in the dry for substantially more grip when the temperatures drop and snow covers our roads. Tyre makers reflect that interest with new all-season options appearing far more frequently than before as they try to meet the demands of the market. This all makes this a key test for many drivers, and one we were determined to complete in 2021, despite strict travel restrictions early in the year. Our planned trip to Hankook’s facilities in Ivalo, Finland, was impossible, so the firm’s engineers…

Best snow foam lances 2021

Best snow foam lances 2021

ADVICE
Just as clay bars emerged from the professional world into mainstream car care, snow foam is now part of just about every maker’s range, and a lance to lay it on is equally important.Snow foam has moved into the spotlight because people’s desire for touchless – or at least as touchless as possible – cleaning has grown. To use it, you lay a thick blanket of foam over your car to soften and loosen grime. When it has dripped away, a pressure washer can then remove the bulk of the remaining dirt, leaving only a little to be removed with a mitt. We’ve tested foams, but what about the cannons? We gathered nine to find the one to turn every car white. How we tested themWe looked for a lance that could…

How to choose the best child car seat 2021: 10 of the best from £100 to £500

ADVICE
Choosing a car seat for your child can be a challenge with such a wide variety available, but UK child car seat rules require children up to 12 years old to use one, so it’s an important decision. The problem is these seats are only designed for use up to around the age of one, by which point you’ll be shopping around for a child car seat. There are many options for child car seats which are categorised into different groups. Best folding workbenches 2021

Best folding workbenches 2021

ADVICE
A workbench is an essential bit of kit for anyone who likes tinkering with their car or doing any other form of DIY. It allows you to hold, hammer, paint and polish parts away from the car, providing a means to keep you and the components safe and secure. You’ll also find a workbench invaluable for clamping parts such as hoses and trim while they are being cut. Not all of us have the garage space for a full, fixed bench with a vice, but you can still find a decent compromise with a folding version. The original – the Workmate – was invented in the sixties by a Ford and Lotus car designer. Folding workbenches provide a safe platform to put parts on and clamp tight while you work on them.…

Best emergency breakdown lights 2021

Best emergency breakdown lights 2021

ADVICE
Breaking down can be a frightening experience, especially if you are unlucky enough to be forced to stop on an unlit country lane or so-called smart motorway with no hard shoulder. This is when making sure your stranded car can be seen by other traffic could literally be a lifesaver.Although warning triangles are not a legal requirement in the UK, they can make a real difference to your safety if your vehicle comes to a stop, alerting other drivers that there is a hazard ahead well before they see your car.But are triangles still the best way to make sure you are seen in an emergency? There are now plenty of other warning devices available that claim to offer even better protection by making your car visible from further away. As…

Best car polish

Best car polish

ADVICE
Before the detailing revolution, some car care producers used to treat wax and polish as the same thing. That has largely died out as more consumers realised that polishes are designed to improve the finish, while waxes are there to seal in that shine and protect it.For heavier marks and severely deteriorated paint, more abrasive products should be used. But it’s always a good idea to gradually reduce the level of coarseness, just as you would do when finishing bodywork with ever-finer sandpaper. How we tested themThere are different levels among polishes and, where possible, we went for the lightest abrasive, as we were looking for the best shine after a set number of passes over our sectioned bonnet. To find the best, we used a pad to ensure even pressure,…
