Full size remote control cars due on UK roads in 2022

NEWS
Remotely driven cars will be hitting the roads of Milton Keynes in 2022, as British tech start-up Imperium Drive launches public trials of the app-based Fetch ride-hailing service.Users of the app will be able to summon a car, which is then delivered by a driver operating the vehicle remotely via a steering wheel and monitors. A wireless connection to the car over the 5G mobile phone network allows it to be driven from a remote office, and Imperium Drive says there are sufficient failsafes to mean cars in the public trial won’t need a back-up driver on-board during the remote control deliveries. The Fetch app will be the first application of remote driving tech in the UK, the company says. It reckons the service will be a first step in the transition…

‘Not everyone can or wants to go fully electric just yet’

NEWS
We're big fans of the Kia Niro – the car that really started to position the Korean brand as a major player in the fast-growing world of electric cars. The new model looks set to continue the good work of its predecessor by giving buyers the opportunity to taste electrification without having to go the whole hog; it’ll be available as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or a full EV. I’m not sure that contrasting rear panel does it any favours, though. What is clear is that not everyone can or wants to go fully electric just yet, in spite of the proliferation of EVs from every major manufacturer. And hybrids do their bit to lower emissions and reduce running costs, while not relying on a plug and socket. Even if you do…

Cars to give way to cyclists when turning left or right

Cars to give way to cyclists when turning left or right

NEWS
The Highway Code is set to undergo a huge shake-up that means cyclists and pedestrians get priority over motorists at junctions. The government announced today (1 Dec) that a statutory instrument has been laid before Parliament, and that the updated Highway Code will become law on 29 January 2022. The move follows pressure from the cycling lobby, and a public consultation process the Department for Transport (DfT) says shows a majority of people support its moves.Pedestrians currently have priority over cars only if they are already crossing a road into - or from which - a car is turning, but a new Rule H2 gives priority to pedestrians who are waiting, mandating vehicles stop to let them cross. A new Rule H3 is arguably more controversial. It states: “You should not…

Striking new Nissan Ariya Single Seater Concept unveiled

Striking new Nissan Ariya Single Seater Concept unveiled

NEWS
Nissan has given its engineers a chance to let their hair down with a striking new race car concept unveiled in Japan which, believe it or not, shares the same platform as the pure-electric Ariya SUV.It’s called the Nissan Ariya Single Seater Concept, and it’s designed to showcase how readily the SUV’s platform could lend itself to performance applications.Nissan hasn’t confirmed any performance specifications for the concept, other than the fact that it uses the brand’s CMF-EV underpinnings and e-4ORCE four-wheel drive, dual-motor electric powertrain. However, as it’s a race car concept, we expect Nissan will have used the most potent version of the Ariya’s powertrain, which produces 389bhp and 600Nm of torque. In the standard Ariya SUV, that’s enough for a 0–62mph time of 5.1 seconds. We expect that time…

Volkswagen Aero B: 2023 Passat-sized EV spotted again

Volkswagen Aero B: 2023 Passat-sized EV spotted again

NEWS
Volkswagen is continuing development of a long-awaited electric alternative to the Passat, with new spy shots showing the model in modest camouflage wrapping.Internally codenamed ‘Aero B’, the model will rival cars such as the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2 and forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq 6 when it is released to the market in 2023. Although the prototype seen in these images appears to be more reminiscent of a production car, VW’s clever application of its disguise means that we can’t say for sure that the front and rear profiles - in particular the lights - will look like this. The Aero B was first shown as a concept, dubbed the ID. Vizzion, at the 2018 Geneva motor show. We expect the finished car’s name will stick with the traditional ID naming convention. In…
